Boy Scout Saves Sister's Life

12-Year-Old Performs Heimlich Maneuver

Imagine sitting next to your younger sister one moment and saving her life the next.

That's just what happened to a 12-year-old Boy Scout, who apparently lives with the Scout motto to be prepared and to do his best to help other people at all times.

"I was doing my homework, and I was drawing, and she was eating some carrots," explained Jackson Baker.

"I started to choke, and I couldn't breathe anymore," said his younger sister, Jordyn Baker.

"Her face was turning red, and her coughing was getting really intense," her brother said.

Luckily for Jordyn, Jackson recently learned the Heimlich maneuver.

"First thing I saw was her face and I could see the distress that she wasn't getting air, and then Jackson gave her the Heimlich and the carrot flew out of her mouth," said their mother, Tracy Baker.

Jackson is on track to become an Eagle Scout with Troop 36 in Littleton. Last year, he earned the merit badge for first aid and remembered one of the lessons.

"I got behind her, and I made a fist and pulled in and up. It took a couple of tries but finally the carrot came out," he said. "I felt pretty good to use what I learned in Scouts."

"Fortunately for Jackson he had all the knowledge and experience he needed when the situation occurred and he was able to jump right in and do what needed to be done," said his Scout master, Rocky Williams.

Jackson is rather humble about the whole experience.

"After it was over, he was like, 'Mom, I think I saved her life.' And I was like, 'Yes, you did!'" said his mother. "What took place was so amazing I'm going to remember it my whole entire life."

"I'm thankful for him," his young sister admitted.

In true Scout spirit, Jackson has one more tip for his friends who learn first aid skills with him.

"Don't knock it out of your mind. Keep it in the back because you never know if you will need it or not," he said.

Jackson's Scout master said he will soon be presented with an award of valor from the Boy Scouts of America.
